Omloop Het Nieuwsblad 2026: Van der Poel Dominates on his Debut
Mathieu van der Poel had never raced Omloop Het Nieuwsblad before 2026 — but you’d never have guessed it. The Dutch superstar made his debut on February 28th and immediately turned it into a masterclass, attacking on the iconic Muur van Geraardsbergen and riding the final 16 kilometres solo into Ninove.
The race was chaotic from the start. Crashes hit dozens of riders throughout the day, with the peloton constantly reshuffled by crosswinds and cobbles. Jasper Philipsen punctured at the worst moment. Tom Pidcock was distanced on the climbs. Paul Magnier was forced into two bike changes.
When it mattered most, Van der Poel was perfectly positioned. On the Molenberg he followed an attack by Florian Vermeersch, with Tim van Dijke also bridging across. The three caught the early breakaway and moved to the front — but Van der Poel was saving his real move for the Muur. His acceleration there was immediate and decisive. Nobody could respond. He crested the climb with a 30-second gap and never looked back.
Final podium:
- Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech)
- Tim van Dijke (Red Bull-BORA-Hansgrohe)
- Florian Vermeersch (UAE Team Emirates-XRG)
It was a statement victory — Van der Poel throwing down the gauntlet ahead of the Spring Classics proper. With Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix still to come, he looks ominously good.
Van der Poel continues his Classics campaign at Milan-San Remo this Sunday. Read our preview here to see if he can add another Monument to his early season haul.
